High ad spend doesn’t mean high returns. Account performance usually degrades due to preventable budget leaks—broad match bleed, poor campaign structure, and unoptimized bidding. The good news: a short, regular review routine catches most of it.

1. Scrub Search Terms Weekly

Broad match with Smart Bidding can waste budget on non-converting queries.

  • Sort search terms by spend over the last 30–90 days.
  • Exclude terms consuming over 1.5x your Target CPA with zero conversions.
  • Build account-level negative keyword lists (e.g., “free,” “jobs,” “DIY”).

2. Isolate Brand Traffic

Never mix brand traffic with generic non-brand keywords. Brand clicks inflate CTR and conversion metrics, hiding poor performance in non-brand acquisition.

3. Don’t Over-Adjust Smart Bidding

Frequent bid adjustments disrupt machine learning algorithms.

  • Keep target adjustments within 15% at a time.
  • Wait 7–14 days between changes to allow campaign learning to stabilize.

4. Upgrade RSA Asset Quality

Check Ads & Assets > Assets. Replace headlines or descriptions rated “Low” with specific value propositions, quantitative proof points, or clear CTAs.

5. Cut Low-Performing Geographies

Review Locations > Where ads showed. Exclude or apply negative bid adjustments to regions with consistently high CPA.
